On the standard ruler there are 16 marks, some being larger in length than the others.
The first mark on the ruler you see is refered to as a sixteenth. (1/16).
The second mark is refered to as an eight. (1/8).
The third mark you will see will be the small mark again. It is refered to as three sixteenths. (3/16).

The fourth mark you see on the ruler is refered to as a quarter inch. (1/4).

Well, there you have it in a nutschell all the way to the wounderful quarter inch.

Good Luck learning the ruler! have fun!
