When you generally think of chivalry you think of the brave knight coming to rescue the damsel in distress...well at least a form of that. We were discussing modern day chivalry and ancient chivalry in class today and also talking about feminism.

I think chivalry is generally thought of as a rule of thumb for men, or at least it use to be. Nowadays you don't see it anymore. There is a difference between being chivalrous and being overbearing. Some feminists I know get mad if a man opens a door for them, or offers to pay for dinner. I however would be fine with that because I would open the door for the man also and offer to pay.

Another thing I've noticed....while on a bus (for example), the older men are more likely to give up their seat for a lady that comes on the bus while the younger generation tends to watch them standing there hanging on for dear life.

So, is chivalry dead? And if you don't think it is do you wish it was?

Terra...why cant both men and women practice chivalry? I noticed at walmart yesterday (yeah, I know walmart) there was an older man who dropped a carton of pop...it went everywhere. Tons of people passed, but none bothered to help. Wouldn't that have been considered chilvary to help?

The Dude believes firmly in chivalry, but he's old school.

I was raised to be a gentleman and that's where the chivalry comes from. Feminism aside, chivalry makes room for it. Being chivalrous means being polite and gentlemanly in most aspects of life. Opening doors for women (and others, men included), not yelling at people for no reason, extending a helping hand to someone who needs is are all part of chivalry.

It shouldn't die. I plan on teaching my nephews about it when the time comes and definitely to my sons, if I ever have any.

Ladies, it is fine to be a feminist and be independent, just don't go into uber-anger mode when I man is simply being nice to you. Some of us actually have the best intentions behind our actions.

There are a lot of guys (I believe) that would in fact hold the door or pay the check if not for the swing in societies thinking on that. We (men) have been "trained" to respect woman in different ways now. I am from the old school. I like chivalry. I don't think it makes woman "weak". We both have are roles.

chivalry has not died at all the romantic image is still strong. when the idea was first invented it was no more than an idea. people still married for the same reasons as the had before which were Political, and was still used as a way of diplomacy and to fasten alliances. for example i think it was Raymond of Toulouse who married a 11 year old girl when he was in his 30's to fasten his alliance, just when chivalry was started, and massacres were carried out regardless of chivalry.

Chivalry is not dead, and I do not want it to be. After 22 years, my husband is still chivalrous with me, and we are teaching are sons to be the same. It's called manners. The Dude's answer cut right to the heart of it, wonderfully.

It's not totally dissappeared but it's very rare to come accross, young people today have been raised with very little to no morals and no respect for the opposite sex or for older people. It's very sad.

It is not dead, but rabid feminists have done their best to try to kill it and keep trying.

Chivalry is dead. Equality killed it. I believe it should be dead for that exact reason. We should be equal. Do for me and I will do for you, but don't ever think that I NEED you.
