I think that the number 1 answer is spending time with them. Kids also know that they are important to their parents when the parents listen to them. Sometimes I will pick up my sons favorite magazine with him and we will go over the articles together. That always makes him feel special.

What the previous posters said is good, also a good thing is showing an interest in their interests. If your child likes space, take them to the planetarium, get them star books - show that you care about what they like and dislike.
make time for them throughout your whole day, including them in your daily tasks.

Read to them, spend time with them, play with them, be there for them. Just about anything to let the child know that they are loved.
