Has a boss or employer ever actively helped you realize your dreams?

I asked about terrible bosses; now I want to hear the other side! Why, you ask? I have had experiences with both extremes, great and terrible, and I am a supervisor trying to help my employee get what he wants out of life.

I have had a manager help me identify my strengths and consequently a job suited to those strengths. I was in Quality Control and Production Management (Science Field) for 5 years when a Marketing Manager asked me if I would like to try sales. I told him that I knew nothing about sales and he said that I had the personality and the chemical bacground. He continued to pursue this line of argument even after I left the company. Later, I took the risk and embarked on a Sales career. I have been in it for 10 years now and I have not looked back. I believe that sales is best suited to my personality. Now I have a B.B.A. (Marketing major). Sales is rewarding and if you get paid on commision, your earning potential is huge. Had it not been for this manager I would still be in production or operations management (I enjoyed being in production but I prefer Sales).

On the flip side, I have also had a boss who refused to give me a promotion despite the fact that I was qualified and capable of doing the job and despite recommendations from my then manager. Try to match experiences , qualifications and personalities with job types and you might lead your staff to a great career.

Absolutely. I have had both good and bad bosses. My last boss was one of the good ones. I was working in one department, and he came over and asked if I would come work for him. In return for my moving to his department, he sent me to school to become a Unix administrator. That was 10 years ago, and my salary has trippled since then.
