There was at one time an extended coverage on the head gaskets for the thunderbirds, mustangs, and windstars with the 3.8 liter, but it expired a few years ago. This was a problem with the 3.8 liter, poor gasket design. Also make sure the front timing cover is not leaking coolant into the oil pan. If it has been leaking and the engine has been operated with water in the oil, it is not worth trying to repair, damage has already occured. The best option if you have ran the engine with water in the oil is to replace with a remanufactured engine. It may run good now, but the 3.8 liter has high bearing failure rates after front cover or head gasket repairs have been performed. It does not take much to damage the bottom-end of this engine. I would suggest a replacement engine if the rest of the vehicle is in good shape.

Type in "99 windstar recalls" into the yahoo search bar, and you will find a lot about this. It is a common problem, and they did recall a bunch of them for this problem. Yugi29 above is dead on the answer, and knows what he is talking about. This is a tough problem to resolve, and can get pretty expensive to do. I would estimate it at more than $1,000 to repair. Ford should have made this right, but then again I guess that is why they are in financial trouble. Good Luck!

there became into no keep in mind, yet approximately 5 years in the past they had a application that gave a protracted guarantee on the pinnacle gaskets as much as one hundred,000 miles or 5 years from unique guarantee start up date. Your automobile may be nicely out of that application.

Not according to The NHTSA.

There may be non-safety related recalls as well. Go here to look up your VIN and see if it is subject to any recalls or TSBs.
