Sodium atoms have 11 electrons. Two of these are in the lowest energy level, eight are in the second energy level and then one electron is in the third energy level.

It also has 11 protons and 12 neutrons.

Get 34 ping-pong balls and some wire and paint.

Paint 11 of the balls green - these are the protons
Paint 11 of the balls black - these are the electrons

glue the 11 protons and 12 neutrons together in a roughly spherical mass. With two pieces of straight wire that will be long enough to attach the electron energy levels.
This is the nucleus.

Then make three round pieces of wire that are each larger than the other. These are the energy levels of the electrons.

Put 2 electrons on the smallest
The middle will have eight and the top will have one.

Now attach the round wires to the straight wires and you have a 3-d model of a sodium atom.
