I lived in Hillingdon, Middlesex as a child and have now moved back I get the hump cos things have changed. My postcode is an Uxbridge one now so mosttimes my mail is Uxbridge, the sign at the top of my road reads Hillingdon Heath, ,my Bt bill is Hayes(which has a London No.), im in a Hayes ward polictically. So I was brought up to believe I lived in Hillingdon in the borough of Hillingdon now it seems the Royal mail are forcing me to say I live in Uxbridge when its at least a mile away.So Uxbridge,Hillingdon,Hayes or as I see it no where land of limbo I balme the Uxbridge sorting office the bastards!!
It does affect my mail and it looks like I have to accept Uxbridge as my address although we all no its not!

LMAO This has happened to me before. It is almost comforting to now know that it happens in other places too. Actually it has happened more than once.... First off the home I grew up in was outside of the city limits-but address&bill-wise it still recieved the city name-legally. However, postal code for my home I grew up in is actually the postal code for a small neighboring town-BUT regardless of which city the mail sender puts down-it'd come to the corrrect address since the small town recieved it & we were in the small town's mail delivery area.****** Skip ahead 20some years & I move into that neighboring small town. Right in Exact center to be exact ( I lived at the corner of the 2 main roads) which one would OBVIOUSLY assume the city/town to be Chesterfield (name of small town). This was true for personal mail, because it was in fact IN Chesterfield. However-the phone, electric & cable companies refused to believe this. The gas & water companies did though :)-Anyways, those bills would constantly arrive to my door LATE. Because they would go to the post office in the CITY & not into the small town's post office. Why this was & still is I'm sure, I can not say. It was soooo frustrating trying to talk to those companies. When they had to come out to the house thedriver would be driving along Main St. in the city & never find my house because they were in the wrong place & the house # (which was simply 8) didn't exist in the city only in the town. It was soo confusing, I understand your frustration. It is the same sort of situation(s) over here (US) too. Good luck on ever figuring out why. & oh yeah did I mention the ORIGINAL postal code at the home I grew up in became non-existent one day when I was a child & changed-I remember it being a big deal to the adults around me at the time. LOL Thanks for making me feel less alone in this type of frustration & I actually laughed too while reading your Question!

Your postal address is Uxbridge. The address relates to the sorting office and not your place of residence. Not all residences have a sorting office and apparently Hillingdon is in the Uxbridge area of delivery. So as long as you place your proper address the Uxbridge office will deliver your mail to you.

Talk to the post office about it. I realize that you actually live in Hillingdon and would like your mailing address to reflect that but it won't do you much good if it keeps you from getting your mail in a timely manner. Perhaps you can add another line or put (Hillingdon) in parentheses. I don't know the English rules.

I live on a road that was incorrectly signed by the ordance survey years ago. To confuse matters another road with the same name exists very near by, so there are two roads that go in completly diffrent directions with the same name, half way down my road the name changes back! It causes problems with our post as we get letters for our address and the same number on the road with the other name! Im afraid all you can do is use the post office address. They are a stuborn bunch, we have had no luck with the council either! Im afraid you are stuck with the situation:-(

First, determine your exact physical address where you want to receive your mail and then verify your location with the post office. They should know if your address is within their coverage area. Second, inform those who sends you letters and bills of your correct postal address. Third, you might want to consider getting yourself a post office box.

Looks like you are at the mercy of the Hilingdon Local Authority, in any case (see link below).
Fortunately, nowadays, almost nothing important is actually sent via the mail.

It often happens that your postal and phone address are different. The sorting office is in one area and the exchange in another

There is a very simple answer to this question.
Your postal address is NOT your geographical address.
Everything (after your house name / number and street name) can be completely different to your actual (geographical) address.
