the formula H = 34 - A /2 is sometimes used to relate a person's aga, A, to the number of hours of sleep they need every day, H.
the question is : How old is a person who si getting his or her optimal amount of sleep, 8 hours per day?
/ = over or ___

thank yall so much!! please dont tell me i need to do my own homework cuz i dont understand this one and i have tried a bunch of times!!!

Use the formula and replace H with 8. Once you have writen the equation, resolve the equation for A. To solve first get rid of the 34, then get rid of the division by 2. The answer you will get will be negative, but you also will have a negative in front of A, so divide by -1, and you will have your answer.

Hope this helps.

Please don't just read the answer and write it down. Read through this whole thing to find out WHY it is the answer so you'll know how to do it next time.

Okay, look at it. You KNOW what H is, right? 8. So you can replace the H with the number 8. This gives you:

8 = 34 - A/2

The next step is to get the 34 onto the other side, right? So, subtract 34 from both sides.

8-34 = 34 - 34 - A/2

And that makes:

-26 = - A/2

Then, you can multiply both sides by -1 to get rid of the - sign.

26 = A/2

Now, multiply both sides by 2.

26 * 2 = A/2 * 2

This makes

52 = A

And that is what you are solving for, A. You want to know the age of the person.

Since you want to find age, you are going to want to find the value for A. You are given that the optimal amount of sleep, H, is 8.
So, 8=34 - A/2 is the equation you are going to work with. Now, solve for A.

Oh, who cares about this silly arithmetic, the interesting thing is this formula. lets see, a 20 year old will sleep 24 hrs a day. Well yeah, I've seen 20 yr olds do that. Then by 52 (as shown MANY times above), it is down to 8 hours. But hey, if we manage to hit 68 we will not have to sleep at all (I can hardly wait). Just party round the clock. Probably the reason you can then expect to die soon. Oh well, Hope you get an A.

H = 34 - A /2 (you need to isolate A)

H=8 hours per day

8 = 34 - A/2

8 + A/2 = 34

A/2 = 34-8

A/2 = 26

A = 26 *2

A = 52 years old

Use 8 in place of H, and then solve the problem for A.

8 = 34 - a/2
-26 = -a/2
-52 = -a
52 = a
52 years old

Ashley, you really do need to do your homework! And pay attention in class. From what you have written for the question the answer is clear. There are two variables in the equation, you have been given one. All you have to do is substitute in the value for the given value and then solve for the other variable. In this case you want to solve for A.
