Many people will go to about any length/cost to assess a pet's health and treat them. The vet should be honest about the prognosis before suggesting any tests and the potential benefits of running any tests, etc. You should expect to pay an office visit plus whatever tests/intervention you agree to and the vet should never make you feel like you're not a "good parent" if you can't afford it or decide not pursue additional care. You want your pet to be comfortable and do what you can for them but you also have to know when to let them go or humanely have them put to sleep rather than allowing them to suffer.
Since you were out of town your sister probably didn't want to feel responsible for not doing everything possible to save your guinea pig. You didn't comment if they tried to reach you but I'm sure they had your happiness and best interests at heart.
I'm very sorry that you lost your guinea pig - it's always very difficult to lose one of our furry friends.

It was wrong for the hospital to charge so much, but you know hospitals, they're going to get every dime they can out of you, even though it only cost them a tenth of what they charge you. As for being angry about the money, I supposed they thought that they were just trying to help you out, but they should've called you if it was possible to find out what you wanted done first, before they spent the money that you had to pay back.

There are unscrupulous Vets, just like there are unscrupulous Doctors, or Dentists or Politicians.
Personally, I think it's the "I've spent so much money getting where I am, that everyone else is going to pay for that forever" mentality.

DOOM is a genius. He can rhyme speedy, he can rhyme sluggish. His lyrics are outstanding. Lil Wayne isn't even on his point. he's no longer even a a million to DOOMs 10. You all ought to coach your self in MF in case you have not got self assurance me. he's rather prolific too, genius beats.

I don't know about veterinary medicine, but in the human realm, doctors are forced to keep trying if the family wants everything done. If they do something, they charge for it.

How sad, the doctors should have stopped trying once they knew it was too late. False hope for you and your family. Talk to the Vet, and see if they will come down, explain your frustration too!
