The heliocentric theory WAS considered controversial because it went against the church's (Catholic) biblical interpretation that Earth was the center of the universe. If the Sun was the center of the universe some could question all Catholic biblical interpretations. Hey, if it were proven they got one interpretation wrong, then who is to say other interpretations may be wrong as well.
Galileo was imprisoned for his beliefs.

The Heliocentric Theory

Originally, the Catholic church (which held a lot of power during Galileo's time) said that the Sun and the planets and stars revolved around the Earth. Galileo showed that the Earth revolved around the Sun. This was controversial because Galileo was defying the Church and making heretical claims. He was right, of course. The Church, many centuries later, apologized for their treatment of Galileo.
