I also am not sure about the mucus plug, I have noticed the last couple weeks I have had heavy discharge but does that mean I lost it and does being effaced 100% mean I lost it??

With your first baby, you can be at 2cm for weeks (sorry, I know thats not what you wanted to hear). Your mucus plug is exactly what it says.. mucus like you blew your nose in your panties and usually tinged with blood. You can loss your mucus plug over a couple days. The last couple weeks of pregnancy, it is very normal to have heavy discharge.

Everybody is different though, I stayed at 2cm with my first for 2 weeks and never had any braxton hicks of contractions until the night I went into labor and I never lost my mucus plug (at least I didnt see it in my panties). With my second, I was not dialated at all one week then the next I was 2cm and that night my son was born. So, its really hard to tell when your gonna have the baby. Continue to be excited cuz 39 weeks means at the very most, your gonna have that baby within 2 weeks!!!!! (most docs wont let you go more than 1-2 weeks overdue) Congratulations and Good Luck!!!

My advice to first time moms: Sleep every second you can while at the hospital. You'll need it :).

Effacement has to do with thinning or ripening of the cervix...it has nothing to do with the mucus plug. And you could be 2 centimeters dialated for weeks...literally...

Generally, the rumor is that the first baby always comes late...I don't know how much truth there is to that...but the bottom line is...the baby will come when he/she is ready...be patient mamma...you'll have plenty of time to be not pregnant, after the baby is born...it won't be much longer now...even if you make it another week or two...chances are they will force an induction no later than 42 weeks anyway...so if nature doesn't take it's course by then...you're doctor will make it happen when it's time. Good Luck!

If you are 100% effaced than you have lost your plug already. You will have the baby soon! Probably in a day or two. You will probably have contractions first before you water breaks. Just take your contractions one at a time. Don't think about how many are to come. It is really not as bad as everyone portrays it to be. It is painful, but you will forget it all once you have the baby. Once they hand her/him to you it is like nothing you have ever felt. Go in to the hospital when you are ready. You can wait until they are about 5min. apart to go in, if you want. You can do it. We were meant to have children & we have the strength. Whatever happens as long as your baby is safe is the most important thing.
CONGRATULATIONS!!!

I had my first 2 weeks early & my second 9 days early! Just cause its your first doesn't mean it will be late!

You probably lost the plug already. No worries, you should be having that baby soon! As soon as that dialation happens, usually pretty fast if you are 100% effaced, you'll be ready to push!!

there is no way to know for certain. Well with my 2nd son i had a doctor appt and it was the one at the end where they do an internal exam and the Dr. said "are you in any pain?" i was just like no not really...then he said "well...you are at 3 maybe 4 cm and completely efaced...and you are having a contraction right now..." i couldnt even feel it...but he was right...i walked home and 3 hours later i was back...he said when i got back that he would have kept me there if i had been in any pain...but w/my 1st and 3rd i was dialated like 4 cm and effaced for almost a week before they finally came

Hi,

Dun worry too much.. if you are 2cm dilated, it just means that your body is preparing for you to have baby.. but it could be something that happens one week down the road as well ;)

You just need to know that you need to go to hospital immediately if:
- your contractions are 10 minutes apart
- you are bleeding
- your water bag has burst

Other than that.. just enjoy yourself and go do all the things you will miss when you are in confinement ;)

Congrats ;)
