The performances weren't as explosive as they should be for the standards of such a big event like the VMAs. Maybe I just feel this way because I anticipated them so much, making it harder for them to meet my expectations.

It was not just you. I felt the same way. I barely watched it because it didn't grab my attention that much. I remember previous years where I wouldn't dare change the channel, use the bathroom, answer the phone, feed the kids, open the door for publishers clearinghouse, or grab my screaming child while the show was on. the good vma;s are when the performers put on a good show.. but nothing is really good on mtv n e more... just trendy songs that cant even be compared to artists of the past.
