I am looking for an answer in simple english, not an answer written for math majors to understand.

There are several definitions, one of which is in the biological realm which I won't describe. One definition is simply the inverse of modulation, that is recovering the modulating signal from a modulated signal, as per the wiki article referenced in answer 1. The other is a tricky filtering method to remove reverberation from a speech signal (to make it more understandable, especially by the hearing-impaired). See the ref.
