Kids stay back a grade for many reasons, and not because they are stupid. Sometimes a kid is a lot younger than other kids in the class because of the month s/he was born and so the work is harder for her/him. For example if the cut off date for starting kindergarten is December 31 and a child's birthday is December 30, that child can start school with kids who were born almost a year earlier (in January of that same year). That year can make a big difference. Sometimes it is best if a child with a late brithday like that stays home a year instead of starting school and constantly struggling to catch up. So many of these kids end up staying back a year at some point.
Sometimes kids with learning disabilities stay back a year. Kids with LD are smart, but they often learn in a different way and it often takes them a little longer to learn some things. Staying back a year gives them some extra time to learn the skills that they need - it simply sometimes takes longer for them to get the work done because of their disability.
Sometimes kids stay back because they have missed so much school time (sickness, moves, skipping off, etc.) that they just cannot cope with the work of the next grade without doing some catch up.
Sometimes kids stay back because they did not get enough support either from school or home to be able to get through the grade.
So there are all kinds of reasons why kids are held back. Every case is different. But your friend is not stupid because of being held back. It may be a really good thing. I have known some kids who decided themselves that they needed to stay back a year, and they did much better after that. That was a really brave decision for them to make.
Give your friend all the help and support you can. I hope both of you have a great year in school.

The first thing you should know is that it is not the norm to hold children back. This happens ONLY under very specific circumstances, and is usually discussed with the principal and the parents. If your friend has to repeat a grade, it is very likely that it is what will ultimately be best for her because she wouldn't be ready to move to the next grade.
Imagine if someone pushed you through to the next math level (for example) if you were still struggling with the current math level. You would struggle even MORE, and you would be adversely impacting the education of the children who belong in that level because the teacher would have to constantly help you keep up. It's not fair to anyone to push someone through to the next level if he/she is not really ready for it. Has nothing to do with being "stupid" --- everyone develops at different rates. Some children simply need more time than others.

No! I have never had a student I thought was stupid. I have had students who like to talk too much, or students who are having problems at home, or students who hate the subject I teach with a passion, or students with special learning needs. Each person has their own strengths and weaknesses.
We know that all students develop socially and academically at different rates. I usually have a great deal of respect for kids who have been held back a year that come back in and try hard to succeed the next year. That shows courage and perseverence, and those are qualities that will get someone very far in life.
Tell your friend that his or her teachers are probably rooting for her, and the better the attitude she has about trying to succeed this year, the more respect she will earn.

No they are not stupid. There are many reasons why a person could be held back a grade, including illness, absences, parent wishes, learning difficulties, etc. Many students need a little extra time to get a grip on the basics. We have found at our school that the students who repeat a year often go on to become the class leaders because they feel more confident about their abilities. They are definitely not stupid.

After teaching for 8 years, I know that just because a student is held back, that doesn't mean that they are "stupid". Some students just have a really bad year and end up suffering at school for that.
Good luck to your friend this year.
Hope this helps.

Most of the time children who have to stay back a grade are held back because the teacher did not give that specific child the attention they needed to learn the information properly.

Serious decision and usually done in cooperation with teachers and parents.
Kid could be a little behind socially or for poor study habits and grades. It s not a decision taken lightly and unfortunately one of those things that is done without the cooperation of the student or friends. Good luck to you and your friend.

NO THEY AREN'T STUPID!!!! ALL KINDS OF STUFF CAN DO THAT TO A KID. IF YOU CAN'T FOCUS ON YOUR HOMEWORK BECAUSE YOUR PARENTS FIGHT, OR BECAUSE U HAVE A D D, OR IF THERE'S A LOT OF PROBLEMS AT HOME, YOUR GRADES ARE GONNA DROP. TELL YOUR FRIEND TO TALK TO A COUNSELLOR OR A TEACHER, OK?
