The director was Stanley Kubrick. Great movie. One of the best parts is when the Shelly Duvall characrer finally reads what Jack has been writing the whole time. She just has an incredible look of terror on her face.

Directed by the late, great Stanley Kubrick, who made a wonderful career out of making films in accepted movie genres, and then exploding those genres.
The real brilliance of Kubrick's film of "The Shining" lies in the deliberate manner with which he paints the portrait of a family in crisis BEFORE they ever arrive at the haunted hotel. That marriage (Jack Nicholson and Shelly Duval) is so screwed up...you just KNOW something awful is going to happen if they're cooped up together for several months...!

If you are speaking of the theater version released in 1980, the director was the late Stanley Kubrick of "2001: A Space Odyssey," "A Clockwork Orange," and "Dr. Strangelove: Or, How I Learned To Stop Worrying And Love The Bomb" fame.
An excellent film in its own right, although not anything like the Stephen King novel it was based on.

Stanley Kubrick was the director. He was terrific and also did "2001-A Space Odyssey", "Clockwork Orange", and "Dr. Strangelove" among others. "The Shining" was a classic movie based of course on the Stephen King novel. I loved the movie and have watched it several times.

It was directed by Stanley Kubrick.
The movie is good, and the special effects are different (they were great at the time it came out). Though the book is much better.

Stanley Kubruck, who also directed A Clockwork Orange. The Shining has got to be the BEST psycho-thriller EVER!

Dick Hallorann: I can remember when I was a little boy. My grandmother and I could hold conversations entirely without ever opening our mouths. She called it "shining." And for a long time, I thought it was just the two of us that had the shine to us. Just like you probably thought you was the only one. But there are other folks, though mostly they don't know it, or don't believe it. How long have you been able to do it?... Why don't you want to talk about it?
