He doesn't always have to pay the bill. Some men like to pay the bill or feel like it is expected of them. A smart woman will bring money on a date with her and offer to pay half, or pay for the meal if he paid for the date last time. When my husband and I went on our first date, he told me up front that he believed that men and women should typically split the costs of the date or alternate paying. For our first date, it was agreed we would share the costs. I guess he was so smitten, he offered to pay for the meal when the date ended. ;) Another point, if you are asked on a date and do not have money, if you wanted to go, you should clarify right then and there when he asks you say that you cannot afford to go out to dinner but perhaps you could make a meal at home together. If he really wants to see you and wants to go out, he will tell you then and there that he is buying.

It just goes back to earlier, simpler times when men were the ones with income. Women were just out to find a man to take care of them financially. It's not like that anymore, but still some expect those things. I, personally, have only been out with 2 guys in my life that have paid for our dates. One of them I married.

I was usually expected to either pay for the date myself (which was utter crap) or to go "dutch" (which is a better idea).

That's not true. These days, most people go dutch. If the woman does the inviting, she can offer to pay for everything, but she doesn't have to. Same goes for the man.

To me the person who asks should pay. But I never assume that the guy is going to pay I offer to pay my part and let him decide whether to pay or not.

Of course this could be the reason there might not be a second date.

because of social equitte teaches us that. why does the guy always have to pick up the girl. its the same reason. I feel if the girl wants to pay then I would let her. I think its hard for most guys to put down their pride. By allowing the girl to pay shows that they are not in charge and most guys like to be in charge. I feel weird whenever I go with my guy friends and they pay for the bill.

Just custom. Man was the bread earner, woman made the home, raised the kids. No longer so true. You're free to pay.

they dont have to. its 2006 and women are becoming more independent. if he offers to pay then thats sweet of him but women should not just asume that he has the bill covered unless he is the one that asked her out in the first place. now that is a different story.
