To say it's okay in war isn't enough. That draws no disctinction between, say, troops fighting for Nazism, and those fighting for the Allies. What we really mean is that it's okay as long feels one is 'right.' But that in itself is a value judgement.

Not if they're trying intent on killing you.

I think there are some circumstances when it's not - like self defence from someone who's an absolute nutter, the only way is to subdue them with whatever you have to hand (which may or may not mean knocking them about the head and possibly killing them in the process). What about all the really bad murderers who've killed lots of people, perfectly aware of what they were doing? Double standards there I think - it's OK for them to kill but it's not OK for them to be killed. It's a waste of time keeping them in prison as they'll never be any use to society and would probably just go and murder more people if let out.

Also war is sometimes the only language some people understand - I don't think these Al-Quieda terrorists can be talked around, they would rather die than be captured. I say kill em all!

Yes... even though we may save a life by killing, two wrong don't make a right, since all killing is murder.

I could only kill to protect someone else. My children, other children... and possibly if push came to shove... someone innocent, threatened with extinction, if the only way was to kill the threat to their life!

Then I'd hate myself forever.

Men are forced to kill in war... and most men returning from a war, seldom ever speak about the things they've done... and have flashback dreams and memories to torment them.

I innocently asked some of them in my youth, those who'd fought the first and second world wars, if they had killed... and I visibly and emotionally (I'm a medium) picked up on on their distress, and their subsequent silence, and need to look away, said the rest!

Well, if you are a soldier and being besieged by people trying to kill you , then what do you do . Let them ? Or fight and kill them?
Having been in that situation, I can tell you that you don't think twice. However, afterwards you get conscience pangs and wonder if you could have done anything differently . It is not a clean business and you can have nightmares for years. So to answer your question. Sometimes it is unavoidable . I am still here other mother's sons are not.

Well God says you shall not murder.
I am believing that since God sent His people out to make war on other people to kill them and rid the land of their influences, that in some instances, it is an acceptable thing to Him.
It is also acceptable to defend oneself or ones family. The protecting of the innocent from evil has always been the noble thing to try to do.
In the cases of accidents, then yes that to can be acceptable unless you were being knowingly disconcerned about doing something dangerous and put another in danger. again the innocent as the victim
it is called negligent homicide, or in some cases manslaughter.

Not legally. I've been there both as a former soldier and in a case of self-defence (justifiable homicide). But no matter how compelling the reason (in the 2nd instance I was protecting my child), it doesn't make it pleasant to live with. I wouldn't change what I did, but I'd give anything not to have had to do it.

I don't think it is always wrong. If I was gravely ill with terminal cancer for example I would want someone to kill me. Sometimes you kill to eat. Other times it is an act of self defence or war. When it is wrong is when it is killing for the sake of it and then it can never be right

It would depend of why the killing took place and what was socially acceptable at the time. To go out and kill someone who disagrees with your view is not acceptable normally, but if you are a soldier and they are the 'enemy' them it is glossed over and accepted. I think all killing is wrong, but sometimes it is unavoidable and understandable.

No. What about in defence, whether it be self defence, the defence of family, friends or your country.
Yes, that defenition does includes war. War is terrible, don't get me wrong. But in that circumstance killing becomes unavoidable, and few people want war.

Also, I think it can be justified as a punishment for murder.

Killing would definitely be an option if you thought it was " kill or be killed " , but it still doesnt make it right. I suppose the instinct to survive could cause you to kill in these circumstances but a life is still a life, no matter what.

Killing is always wrong. But there are times when killing in not avoidable, mainly when it's in self defence.
