Read The Giver. Powerful book, not easily understood by most of the young people who read it much too early.

City of Sparks--haven't read it, but I know that it is very popular with the kids at our school. Last year one of our 5th grade teachers read it out loud.

I read the People of Sparks. Not bad, but I preferred the City of Ember. I thought the characters in the first book were more interesting.

I read the Giver when I was young, one of the most depressing book ever. I cried. The author was terrible to end it like it did. You think all is well and then BAM the book ends and he's dead in a snow drift.

are you maybe thinking of City of Ember and the sequel People of Sparks? both are very good. i read the giver and school and didn't like it. maybe because i was forced to read it.

I've read the giver multiple times over the years for school assignments. A couple of years ago, I read it in three different classes, for three consecutive years. Its a great book, Lowis Lowry is a great author, but I'm tired of it. I've read it so many times that it lost its appeal.
