Wow, I never thought of that ... I am a real stickler for washing my hands before I eat, but you are right ... touching one of those items I would just re-germify myself :). Thanks for the head's up! From now on, I am using a napkin to handle those things!

Yes. Absolutely disgusting. I generally avoid even using them and, if I "have to", then I use Purell or Germ-X before touching anything else. Considering people touch the tops of the shakers or condiment bottles, etc. that doesn't completely resolve the issue.

Buffets fall in the same line. People don't wash their hands, then go through the line and touch all the serving utensils...or the kids/people who are short enough that the sneeze guard doesn't protect the food. Blech!

No. It never even occurred to me. And now that it has, it still won't bother me. I think our society is getting way too phobic about "germs" and I have felt that way for a long time. It seems to be getting worse. Humans have survived much less hygienic conditions than restaurant salt and pepper shakers.

Not only do I hate touching them, I don't use them either. You never know what the people who sat at that table put in them. That can really be dangerous if you really think about it. I bring my own Ketchup packets and I always ask for a to go cup for my drink and to go silverware also.
