There is no best.
There are, or have been a number of very good cop/ detective and private detective shows as far back as I can remember. And back, even further, there were shows I can only vaguely remember. Jack Webb's, Dragnet, being a perfect example.
But the granddaddy of NYPD styled cop shows, and every bit (if not better) as good, was Hill Street Blues. An extremely popular, (ahead of it's time), weekly series that individually humanized police, show.

The early series with David Caruso - yes. Jimmy Smitts - not so bad. Whoever the guy was who took over then - dire.

well,i do love the show and have all series on dvd,but a show called third watch is pretty **** hot too! i could reel off a list of great cop shows mostly from america!!!

I don't like Dennis Franz. All he did on that show is look mad. I like Law and Order, the original.
