Most languages on Earth structure their sentences much like Yoda does, except Yoda speaks English. So, in actuality, it's the people who speak English who 'talk backwards'.

I always took it to mean he was translating into English from whatever language a Yoda speaks.
Many languages have their verbs at the end of sentences.
