I am guessing by you putting... the best way and old and dirty
together that the carpet is nasty! So... get a pair of vice grips go to the furthest corner of the room pull up the corner and attach the vice grips to the carpet. Once that is done tie a rope to the vice grips and the other side to your car. The next step is easy just get in and drive..... works every time!! gets it out the door and you didn't have to touch it.... lol.. sorry there is not an easy way with nasty carpet, hold your breath grab some and go.

It depends on if it is glue down or tak down. Most residential carpets are installed over pad and tacked down at the edges with tack strip. The carpet and pad should be come up pretty easily, and you can pull up the tack strip with the flat edge of a hammer. Glue down carpet is much more laborious because you have to scrape the adhesive off.

1) loosen carpet around baseboards. Remove baseboards (carefully ! ) if you plan to put down new carpet.
2)cut carpet in half with carpet knife.
3)roll up old carpet and matting and take to trash.
4)remove all staples and carpet tacks.
5)use a shop vac to carefully vacuum bare floor. If any dried glue is present, use a putty knife to scrape or chisel it up.
