We've always left it a little long and it seems to come back quicker than the neighbors in spring (in Idaho). Of course, now in Arkansas, it doesn't matter that much.

Normally you want to keep the height of the grass between 3.5-4.0 inches throughout the spring and summer. When you get into September you should start to lower your mower a little at a time until you get to the last mowing when it should be 2.5-3.0 inches for the winter. If you keep it too long there is a better chance you may have certain fungal diseases in the lawn come February or March.

It is really just depending on the type of grass that you have and your personal preference. I know what we do with our lawn, we have Bermuda and in the fall when it starts to turn brown for the winter, we will cut it low and do a winter fertilizer. If its fescue, you can cut it higher and you can cut it all winter because it will grow, just a little during the colder months (I live in GA). Go to a home improvement store and check out the different fertilizers and do what is recommended for the type of grass you have.

Leave it a bit high and be sure to use a sharp blade. Fertilize to promote root growth. Use fertilizer with a higher 3 rd number like 8-8-16
