Herne Hill, in relation to the surrounding areas, is quite green with tree-lined streets. Poet's Corner (roads named after poets like Shakespeare, Chaucer, Spenser ) are quite desirable due to location close to the station, shops and Brockwell Park (The park has an outdoor lido being renevoated for summer 2007.)
As it is not on the tube it is more affordable than other areas of London.
Whether it would suit you or not depends on what you are looking for. Though there are some good bars with 20-somethings, for the best part there are a lot of 30-something professional couples, with babies, dining out in the local cafes/restaurants.
If this is on the quiet side for you Brixton is very close by with a very vibrant night life. As a single woman I personally find the area no-less safe than other parts of London, you just have to be sensible when going out late at night.
To get into central London you would either need to walk/get a bus to Brixton to join the Victoria line or get an overland train to Victoria.
The best way to guage is to check it out both during the day and try your walk home from the station in the evening too.

I think it's OK if you want cheaper accomodation.
No where is cheap in London anymore.
I think it's a good spot, because you have lots of buses going to central London, you are a ten minutes walk to Brixton Tube Station.Plus there is a railway station.Brockwell park is very nice, there a great open swimming pool, and for food Brixton market is good and cheap.
The housing is Victorian is the rooms are not too small.
Herne Hill has a great Velodrome, probably the most important in the Uk.
It has a nice Art Gallery , 198.

Hi, i used to live in herne hill and it is absolutely lovely. near the station is the best as there are a few great restaurants, couple of cool bars, hairdressers, cute shops. brockwell park is right there too, with a lido and a lovely cafe up the hill. i recommend living there- the further from camberwell the better. herne hill is a haven between camberwell brixton and tulse hill. do it, full of arty young professionals.

Its good to see such balanced arguments!
Like all places in London, it really depends on what you expect and where you have been living.
Herne Hill has it good and bad points.
Bad: yes, its close to brixton and loughborough junction. Both places dont help themselves.
But
Good: It is like a village with a small centre with decent facilities, a few places to eat, a few to drink and connections to all of London.
There are some good roads and some no so good.
I would advise you to go down there and see for yourself.
A HH resident.
