Oil should be changed every 3000 miles because it will greatly start loosing its lubricating properties and also after a certain mileage will burn and start to create sludge instead of oil...you can go over 3000 miles but i wouldnt make it a habbit there is oils on the market that will protect a engine well into 6000 miles, now it depends on oil to a $0.99 cent quart of oil will not lubricate or last nearly as long as a $6.00 quart of high quality oil

years ago, before all of these ''oil change'' places popped up, it was usually done once a year. but i think because of the increase of watching car races(nascar, indy 500, formula 1, etc.,etc...) and interviewing the drivers/mechanics, that's how they came to learn that the engine will last longer if you change the oil more often.
for me, i change it every 3 months. 3000 miles doesn't really work for me, cos in 3 months i put on about 5000 miles, so it's cheaper for me to do it my way.

Another very interesting question. I have heard many of those arguments also. What a circus this issue has become. On my cars, I have been changing the oil and filter about every 4000 miles and have had no problems.

I do alot of in town driving and change my oil every 3000 miles. I used to do alot of highway driving and changed it every 5000 miles But I always use Lucas oil additive to stabilize the oil. I really would read the manual for the car also.

Well, you'd both be mad at me...I buy that Mobil 1 extended performance oil(synthetic of course), and go 15k miles on that oil. No problems, and had done once already. But usually, if you use regular motor oil, it is a good idea to do the change every 3k miles. Good luck.

Regardless of what anybody or the oil manufacturer says, change at the intervals in your owner's manual, otherwise you will have no vehicle warranty.
