there is no reason that teaching a women to safely handle a firearm would be a worse idea than training a man. if there are going to be firearms where she is then she should be trained in safe handling, and how to operate the weapons. if she wants to learn defensive use of firearms, then train to your ability, and then point her to those who can further her training.

The question should be
"Is teaching A PERSON how to use and defend him or herself with it a good idea?

A person with access to a gun, , should be trained to use a gun. The second part of the question pertaining to defense. well It is always a good idea for women to learn to defend themselves from physical harm.. I am not sure that you can ,"teach" each a person, Male or Female, to "defend" themselves with a gun. A gun is by it's very nature not much of defensive weapon, more of an offensive weapon. Women are however, known to be excellent marksmen, and that should make some people shake in their boots....

Just as good an idea as teaching a man how to use a gun and defend himself. If aliens attack it might come in handy for everyone to be proficient at the use of guns.

I've been target practicing with revolvers and pistols for 30 years. I have a double barrel shotgun, but I don't like things that kick. I don't know why a woman shouldn't know how to shoot. My mother knew how to shoot years before she knew how to drive a car. If you look at shooting deaths in the US I bet you'd find more are committed by men than women.

No. Most women get scared too easily and will resort to use of a weapon when they are not even being threatened.
