The official SI unit of volume is the cubic meter (m³). When measuring the volume of liquid, a smaller unit is often preferred, thus the si prefixes deci and centi are used, giving cubic decimeters (dm³) and cubic centimers (cm³). The latter two units are often called liters (L) and milliliters (mL), respectively. Although the liter is not the official SI name for the unit, it is accepted for use with SI. Cubic centimeters are also sometimes abbreviated cc, most commonly in the medical field.
