Fertility Awareness Method is great, totally natural so no side effects, it can be used as a highly effective form of birth control, assist in identifying infections as well as reproductive problems, assist in conception, assist in choosing the sex of your baby, help you learn about your cycles, doesn't cost any more than a thermometer (can be get from as little as £1) and it easy to use once learned. In my opinion all girls should be taught how to use FAM or NFP [Natural Family Planning] during school, it would save a lot of problems with regards to unwanted pregnancy and sexual health issues.

There are similar family planning methods as well, using equipment, differing methods of judging fertility, differing methods – FAM and NFP however are the most reliable.

The book - Taking Charge of Your Fertility: The Definitive Guide to Natural Birth Control, Pregnancy Achievement and Reproductive Wealth by Toni Weschler – can be bought from all good book shops, or on Amazon for as little as around £9.

There are a variety of natural family planning methods

The rhythmn method, which I would not recomend, just counts days on the the calender to figure out when to abstain from intercourse. This method assumes a standard cycle every month which is not the case for most women so it is only 75% effective for planning a family.

Women also show signs/symptoms of fertility by monitoring these symptoms and avoiding the days around the appearance of these symptoms you can have a family planning method that is 90+% effective.

Another method is based on monitoring your temperture. By just monitoring your temperture with a special thermometer you can also have method which is about 90+% effective.

If you combine those two methods symptoms and temperture you get a method that is 99% effective or about the same rate as the pill with out all those risky side effects. For most couples depending on the women's cycle this will allow for 250 - 300 days per year where you may have intercourse when not trying to achieve pregnancy..

The Couple to Couple league offers classes around the country where you can learn the 99% effective method, known as the sympto/thermal method. Here is there website http://www.ccli.org/.

As a side benefit married couples who use natural family planning only have about a 1-3% divorce rate compared with a divorce rate of 50% for the rest of society

If you had discussed this with your doctor then you would have an idea of what kind of contraception would be ok for you. I would suggest an Intra uterine device, called "Gynaefix". Its 6 copper beeds on a string and it is stitched intot he top of your uterine wall. It has no hormones in it, so will not put you at risk of DVT, PE, or any weight gain etc. I had one for 3 years and it worked fine. You can have them left in for 5 years. I got mine removed as started to try for a family. It was a bit uncomfortable being put in, like a really sore period, but some painkillers taken before implantation did help!

i've tried a few different forms of contraception, here are my thoughts about each one:-

CONDOM - ruins the moment when you have to stop to put it on! marks out of 10 - 0!
MINI PILL - not too bad, i was put on it cos i kept forgetting to take my usual pill but still kept forgetting!!! 7/10
WITHDRAWAL - too risky 1/10
INJECTION - don't have periods with it which is good but put on loads of weight. Then you have to remember every 3 months to order repeat prescription from GP, collect it from chemist then go back to GP to have it! 3/10
COIL - best by far! they warn you that your periods are usually heavier but i havent found this. you only have to have it checked once a year and swapped every 5 years, apart from that you can relax and not have to worry daily! Just be careful not to have the Marina coil, my friend had problems with this one!!! 10/10

best of luck

I've just started on a new mini pill called cerazette (although another poster said she's been on it for 3 years, but maybe not in the UK). It's as realiable as a combination pill but contains no estrogen so doesn't increase the risk of DVT. It's a 28 day pill so you don't take a break from it. So far I've had no problems with it.

Have you tried the patch? I had to stop having the injection (depro-provera) as they've suddenly decided it's just about deadly, and have been using the patches for the last 3 months with no problems as far as I can tell, and if you're hopelessly forgetful like I am then it's great.
Or i guess you could try a 'coil' but personally don't like the idea of something so unnatural being inside my body....no pun intended.
Try your local GP who should have a well woman clinic and be able to give you a professional, medical opinion.

I have read the many answers you have been getting, some completely stupid. pulling it out before ejaculation I read, a stupider you couldn't possibly get. back in the 1930s it was discovered that men lose a certain amount of sperm before ejaculation.
also remember it only takes one spermatozoa to make a baby!
There is only one sure method and that is the condom, mostly worn by the man, but there is a vaginal condom.
That is the only safe method without side affects.

Hi Bright Spark, What I would suggest is a combination of rythym and condoms. If you are done having children, I would suggest the male take care of this dilemma. Deep Vein Thrombosis is not something to take lightly do not take any form of pill/patch/depo shot/iud with hormones. Stay away from that stuff. Also if you smoke please quit.best of luck to you my friend,
*Rachel*

Why not try a an IUD. This is the first contraceptive that has worked effectively for me after trying the pill, implants and injections. Obviously to condoms

I've been on a mini pill for 3years, its called cerrezette. I've been told its the best out there at the moment, very few side effects. Its also a continuous pill so theres no breaks, I haven't had a period fo three years, and its great for PMS. If you can remember to take it its worth considering.
