I'm sure you must be thinking about Cacophony, who was a duo consisting of Marty Friedman and Jason Becker. Marty was a guitarist who taught lessons here in Hawaii and was in a band called Hawaii. He signed to Shrapnel and released a few albums with Becker, then later joined Megadeth. After Cacophony, Jason Becker played for David Lee Roth before being forced to retire from live music because of the effects of Lou Gehrig Disease. Jason Becker is still alive.

I know that Joe Satriani and Steve Vai were classically trained..
so wasn't Eddie Van Halen..
the dead one has to be Randy Rhoads..he wanted to quit the band and open a classical guitar school.

I'm not sure about Mozart and Beethoven, but Randy Rhoads (who played with Ozzy) was an excellent classical musician, not to mention one of the best of all time.
Engwie Malmstein???Spelling????Never got in to his metal stuff. Excellent classical stuff though.

Yngwie J. Malmsteen played a lot of classical pieces on guitar - plus he gets extra points for being even more egotistical about it than Richie Blackmore
