Hi...do you mean the Lower Peninsula of Michigan. I am from there and I know that we natives always use our hand when people ask us where we are from in the state. I just saw someone do it on Letterman last night. For example, my sister lives in Bad Axe MI. If you look at your hand and then point to the near top of the thumb you have just pointed out where in Michigan Bad Axe is. Is this what you mean?

Might you be thinking of the Finger Lakes in New York state?
