djs use headphones so they can clearly and properly mix two tunes together without double beating. the listen to the beat of one song in one ear and mix it into the one you can hear

To hear tracks before playing them or to determine a reasonable flow before they go ahead to mix it in with the already playing track. I'm sure there are more reasons but I'm not that deep in the game.
