a prototype is the original for what is going to be like the original wheel may have been made from stone and that would be a prototype and then they go from there to see what other material could be used to better the project like rubber tires

There may be other uses of the word, this is the one I know:

When someone, a company or an inventor, has an idea for some new product to sell, the first one is called the prototype and is built to see if the idea works. It might not be built out of the material that you expect to use when you're making hundreds of them, maybe you won't paint it, you might make it larger than the final product will be so you can make improvements more easily, etc.

We create a prototype when we are implementing something new. We are designing it from the scrap and we want to know wethere its going to work properly and what are the modifications to done before actual implimentaion.
Prototype is a working scaled down model of our system of intension. It is a way for low cost testing. and saves time too.
