Sounds like you want a minivan or a SUV. The Ford Windstar has one of the highest crash test ratings for all passengers. The Grand Voyager has similar ratings. You can go and sign up for a limited Car-fax membership where you can put in multiple vin codes for up to three months. This will give you a better clue as to which ones were in flood areas.

Well my car isn't american made but it is awesome and has all that you are looking for. It is a honda pilot. It has four wheel drive which it automatically goes into while you are driving if it slips. Lots of leg room, there are steel beams running down both sides of the car and on the roof. It also has a lot of luxury features and it is still small enough to park easily. It gets great gas milage for an SUV. If you want to stick with a car and a car that is off the ground you will probably have to get a subru (not sure of spelling) those are four wheel drive and off the ground, american made, but very expensive.

If you want to buy a car made in America, go for Honda, Hyundai, Subaru, Toyota or Volvo. Most "American Car Companies" ie, Ford GM and Dodge/Chysler/Jeep are no longer made in the US. If you are looking for a used car, DO NOT buy one of the aforementioned "American Car Companies." Also, contrary to what a previous answer states, do not buy European used unless it is BMW, Benz, or Saab, and if you do buy one of those three, make sure you are well under 100,000 miles. BMW and Mercedes are both incredibly fun to drive, and plush, but they are heaps of crap after 100,000 and they are extremely difficult and expensive to maintain. I have driven countless types brands and models of cars, and the best one that I have ever had is the one that I drive now. My 05 Honda Accord, not a sinlge problem mechanically or esthetically, It is driven hard from San Diego to LA two or three times a week(500 miles/week, around25,000 miles/year), and still is tearing it up!

The best American made SUV for the money is the Toyota Highlander. Very reliable, very safe and goes anywhere with ease. If you want an import truck, you might look at a Chevy made in Mexico.
