i am 40 weeks and two days pregnant, started to feel contractions in my stomach today which might or might not be early labor pains. I am wondering though if the baby is usually active before and during labor or does it stop moving?

I think this is a great question for your doctor. I was always told that the baby moves no matter what. During a contraction the baby stops but inbetween contractions the baby is supposed to move. My daughters did. I was told that especially towards the end movement is important and if you notice that your baby's movement has stopped or slowed you need to contact your doctor or midwife. I think you should talk to a professional. Yes, we are all mothers and have gone through this too but we aren't the experts. You don't want to take advice from this site and then have something happen to your baby. Call your doctor or midwife. Good luck Mommy!

I think every baby and labor is different, so I would definitely check in with your doctor. Everyone, including our birth class leader, said the baby stops moving when he's in position and shouldn't move after contractions. But my son was SUPER active in the womb, throughout the whole pregnancy. Even during labor and delivery. I had contractions for 24 straight hours (not Braxton-Hicks, the real things) before I was dilated even 2 cm, and my son moved the whole time. At the end of my 36 hours of labor, the only time I didn't feel him moving was in the last 2 hours when I had the epidural. =) We had a perfectly normal (my doctor said "textbook") pregnancy and delivery, but in this area we were different.
So, like I said, whatever is going on, it really should be looked at by a doctor.
Congratulations!

Well the baby will slow down during the last few weeks or days of the pregnancy because of loss of room in the womb. Now if the baby is very active after a contraction, then you might want to call your doctor because that could be a warning sign of the baby losing oxygen during a contraction. Just do what the baby book and probably your doctor told you to do-kick counts. I think its 6/hour (I haven't been pregnant is over 3 years) so I can't remember for sure. Call your doctor.

"They" say, whoever they are, that the baby does slow down when you are going into labor...some ppl say they feel no movement as the baby is settling into the birthing position. My baby, however, didn't stop...lol he was moving and turning even in the birth canal...I remember the nurses laughing about that, saying he's gonna be an active child...now he's two, and he's active enough for five 2-yr olds...lol
If your baby isn't too active and you're worried, go to the doctor right away. Nothing is too silly for them...hope I've helped..

Usually the baby's movement slows down prior to labor and delivery.

Good luck with the baby.
