Your accent possibly sounds similar to an American one to our untrained ears. I once spoke to a nice couple born and raised in China who lived in Edinburgh. Both of them spoke English to a very high standard , he spoke with an American accent but had not Ever lived in the USA. I also spoke to a very funny Canadian guy, he was very loudly spoken so I assumed he was from the US. To my ears most Canadian accents sound softer and he never said' aboot' or 'hosers' once!! (I do love American accents though - I was in 7th heaven when I had to do a Louisiana accent for a play!)

There are a few English speaking accents that sound similar Geordie (North East England), Jamaican and Welsh - Believe it or not can be mistaken for each other by other English speakers!!! I have been told I have a cracking 'Cardiff accent' and asked if I come from 'the Islands' before!!! (I was flattered but I am a Geordie!!)

Does it bother you? I am an American (and U S citizen) living in Britain, and have been accused of all sorts of origin. I usually claim to be Canadian, because people seem to feel safer, if somewhat disappointed.

It is a bit annoying isnt it, I think Americans can be much more ethnocentric that Europeans as we are more aware of life outside our borders

If you were born between Alaska and Tierra del Fuego.
You are American...

America is not the United States...America is the continent.
