you people call an I-pod!!!! It seems to me that we have had little music storage/play back systems for years. Why all the excitement over something that costs so much and does really about the same thing? Please explain to an "old man" who has seen fads come and go, why this little machine is something that all parents MUST buy for their children.

Because I can put ALL the music I own (over 300 cds) on one small device (with digital sound quality) and take it with me wherever I go! This has never been possible before iPod. And not just music, a lot of other things too, on the video model. Video podcast, for example.

And the Apple Music Store on iTunes gives you a new way to buy music, and something called instant gratification. It's not a fad!! Plus they're announcing this week they will sell movies like this too.

First of all, no parent absolutely NEEDS to buy something like an iPod for their children if they feel the child doesn't need it, but it's a nice thing to have. Second, you can load thousands of songs onto one and simply take the device with you rather than haul around numerous CDs and the bulky player required to use them. Also, depending on the model of iPod you buy, videos can be loaded onto them as well as photos, which will make for very good entertainment especially on long trips. Even if you don't want to use all the other capabilities the iPod has, you can still use it as a portable hard drive to back up files with, very handy if you're afraid of losing files in case of a hard drive crash. Third, if you can't afford an iPod, there are perfectly good players with similar or better capabilities out there under the $300 price margin.

They can be. Music is and has often been linked to emotional matters and many of the great writers of history have spoken of it as such. I also find that music is often good at arousing feelings in the listener, even when one cannot personally identify with the words of a song or the thematic content. For example I can think of the song "Forever Autumn" (which is included in the "War of the Worlds" musical) and appreciate the feelings of sadness and longing just from the tune, even though I've never lost a lover (or had one to lose). I frankly don't have a song at the moment, though I have a tune in my head...

i don't think kids need one. but i thought i wouldn't want one, until my girlfriend got me one for christmas. i have SO much music on it, and me and all my friends really love talking about music when we hang out. it's basically like carrying an entire wall of records in your pocket. at parties, we can take turns "dj-ing". one of my friends is a musician and he keeps all the stuff he's working on (the most recent recorded versions) on his i-pod, so whenever i see him, he says, "listen to the song i wrote last night!" and i do, and it's great.
they are way too expensive, though.
