Egg in a Bottle: This is a great science experiment.
Materials Needed:
An apple juice bottle or cider bottle
Newspaper
Matches
A hard boiled egg dipped in baking soda
Sauce Pot
-------------------------------------------------
Instructions:
1. Wash and dry the juice bottle. Peel the egg and roll in baking soda.
2. Cut or tear the newspaper into strips.
3. Place the strips into the juice bottle.
4. Light the strips on fire. Adult supervision required.
5. When the paper starts to burn, place the egg over the opening of the bottle.
6. Wait.....keep waiting....
7. The egg will be pressed inside the bottle with a loud pop!

The pressure in the bottle is reduced when the fire uses up the oxygen inside. The force of the air pressure outside of the bottle, pushes the egg inside.
***************************************
The fire in the bottle heats the air, exciting the air molecules and raising the pressure inside the bottle. Because the egg is just sitting on the top it is lifted enough by the higher pressure inside so some air escapes to equalize the pressure. After the fire goes out, the air cools back down and the pressure inside drops. The pressure outside presses the egg against the bottle and makes a seal (the egg acts as a one way valve). Once the air inside the bottle cools enough and the pressure inside drops enough, the now higher pressure outside pushes the egg through the bottle neck.

The most common experiment would be to make a faux volcano. You could make a paper mache volcano with a cup of baking soda in the middle. If you pour vinegar in, the baking soda will foam up and "explode." You could add food dye to make it different colors. If you want to do a more complex system, you could set up a pump to send the vinegar in the bottom or side, so your son/daughter could make it more surprising or realistic. Do you know a handyman, electrician, plumber? They could probably help with the pump...

Mix with vinegar and water, stir briskly. Watch what happens. Over a sink.
1/2 glass water, 1 tablespoon vinegar,
1 teaspoon soda.

Add 1 teaspoon sugar and it makes a great antacid to drink. Really!

You could mix water and baking soda then pour it on your battery terminals on your car and watch it clean the stuff off it... it makes a small reaction... Just keep the caps on the battery...

How about making a magnet? Just take something ferrous (made of iron), wrap wire around it (the more turns, the stronger the magnetic field), and connect it to a battery.
