There is a file called Imhosts on my computer and windows says it cannot open it because it does not recognise what programme created it. I got it in Windows/system32/ etc. I was reading another question on here and decided to see if I could do what it suggested. Is this a harmful file or can I delete it without causing harm to my pc? Do I NEED to delete it? Why does Windows not rec it?

Thanks everybody who answered me. When you know nothing about the inner workings of a pc it can be very confusing. This site has been very helpful to me with computer questions. Thanks again.

this file is used by your system for networking, and should not be deleted. I could get more specific but that´s mainly what you need to know.

Windows won't open it because .sam isn't a registered file extension (i.e it's not an extension like .txt or .mp3 or something file type that Windows knows what to do with). That file is just a text file though so you can see what it's in it by opening something like NotePad first then browsing for the file after selecting the File->Open menu item within in Notepad. The lmhosts file itself is a Windows file that can be used for various networking applications (including internet access) so I wouldn't go screwing around with it, but the lmhosts.sam file is just a sample version so it doesn't really matter what you do with that one.

There are a few different types of files that have the .sam extension. Click here to see the various possibilities: http://www.dotwhat.net/list_s/extension_sam/id_328/

I wouldn't even bother deleting it, unless its taking up a lot of room on your hard drive.

You shouldnt really need to delete it, it doesnt have a recognised extention, thats why windows is saying that.

You can open them in notepad or any text editor if you want to see whats inside. theres rarely anything interesting, just name to tcpip resolutions.
