have had my recent job for nearly 6 years. I am now on maternity leave (in my 2nd 6 month entiltment) and am currently entitled to absolutley nothing. Do you think this is fair ?? Should I have pleased myself and got pregnant when I was 16 like most other people who were in care with me ? What are your thoughts on this ??

Are you in a relationship, or are you a single parent by choice? The extent of any sympathy that I might have depends on the answer to that question. Not that long ago people weren't even entitled to maternity leave. You had a tough start in life and I hope that you do well. It would have helped if you had stated what entitlements you think you should have received. I think that the majority of people work a whole lifetime without receiving anything. I know that people feel aggrieved by what immigrants and single parents receive. This tends to create a chain reaction of entitlement amongst other groups in society. In general terms, this government is being far too free with taxpayers money as regards benefits.

I know exactly how you feel, I'm currently on Maternity and I was like you at first. I only get SMP too, God, did I do some moaning myself!!!!

My partner and myself are in Medicash, so we claimed £400 from that. Then there's your Family allowance and also don't forget to claim for your working Tax Credit, you have to phone up for the application forms ( I think they make it hard so you don't bother applying)

The worst thing I found is the Child trust fund, your child and my child are only entitled to £250, where as those who don't work get £500!!! It so wrong why should someone elses child get more than mine. Just cos we work hard and will probably add to it to give our children better lives. That really annoys me!!!!

It'll just eat you up when you think about it all, society has gone mad, the harder you work, less you get back!!! And this is ment to be a Labour Goverment!!!

Did you know we have one of the worse maternity pay schemes in the world, apparently Italy have the best! So I was told anyway.

It get;'s on my nerves too that I'd have been paid more if I was on the sick!!!

Oh dear, I beter stop moaning, I'm all frustrated now!!!

Anyway, you'll get by. I saved alot before my daughter was born to make my wages up. And I bought alot of two for ones on baby stuff before she was born. If you're like me, you'll get lots of baby clothes so you won't need to buy any till you go back to work (I'm assuming you'll go back to work after 6 months, like myself.) On average at the moment my 3 month old baby costs me an extra £20 a week, and your family allowance will come to £68 a month. Also you could join lots of baby clubs on the internet and they'll send you lots of vouchers.

Good Luck, hope everything goes well. It's the best thing in the world!!! xx

What a dope i am, i've just realised you've had the baby, i'd better stop drinking!!!!!!!

I can sympathise fully.
I have worked full time since 1974, stopping only for 6 months when I had my son.
When I was made redundant a while back I was told that I was only entitled to 20 weeks Unemployment money because I not made enough contributions to be eligible for more. Yet some people never work & seem to live very well off the state.

It seems so unfair, doesn't it.

Have you double checked that you're not entitled to anything? Presumably you're getting maternity pay etc. Check with the Tax Credits people.

I don't really know what else to suggest - but I do agree with you. Hard work and "doing the right thing" seems to count for absolutely nothing in this society. Having a child is probably the most important job of all, and having to be penalised financially is completely wrong.

Wow there are a lot of idiots out there ....I am from IRELAND and i sympatise with the questioneer.IN IRELAND WE HAVE A VERY GOOD SOCIAL POLICY AND WE PAY TAXES AND PAY RELATED SOCIAL INSURANCES WHICH IS STOPPPED OUT OF OUR WAGES ON A WEEKLY BASIS. FOR THIS WE GET THE FOLLOWING
FOR EACH BIRTH IS 6 MONTH MATERNITY LEAVE WITH FULL PAY
FOR THE FIRST 2 CHILDREN WE GET 195 EURO FOR EACH PER MONTH
3 OR MORE WE GET 250 EURO PER CHILD PER MONTH.
THESE ARE NOT HANDOUTS ..THE STATE MAKES SURE THAT CHILDREN ARE PROVIDED FOR ......ITS IN OUR CONSTITUTION UNDER THE HEADING OF ''THE FAMILY''
I DONT KNOCK THE USA BUT FOR A SMALLL COUNTRY LIKE IRELAND WE HAVE A BETTER SYSTEM
also i might add we upon retirement age 66,get the following
free electricity
rent allowance
free travel on public transport
free medical treatment
free tv licence i believe the brittish have some of these

Go to the TUC and get advice.

As for the other answers, how is it liberalism or the governments fault if your company doesn't pay you maternity leave? Because at the same time the anti liberals complain that there is too much legislation - make your minds up.
Plus your lot destroyed the unions that used to protect us all from exploitative employers, remember?

And nobody gets £120 as a single parent. You'd get that if you were disabled and had a kid.
And you don't get a car or get to choose your house either. Your comments are so ignorant as to be beyond belief. You get a crappy house on a run down estate and if you dont like the area its tough.

If you have been in work for that long then you should have put money aside for when you became pregnant, how selfish of you to think that the state would look after you............. well thats the answer that I think the government would like to give you but I think it's a disgrace that you are entitled to nothing, you have paid into the system unlike many who just take out of the system,, I wish you luck.

Yes I to feel the system in the UK is not very fair to us working people. Ok we should be grateful they give us tax credits but even with that me and my partner make nowhere near as much as a couple on the dole with 2 kids! We are basically entitled to bugger all because we own... sorry no, have a mortgage on our property. If we lived in rented accommodation and was on a low wage we would get housing benefit! I would love to be able to stay at home and look after my daughters but we would then loose the tax credits because BOTH parents have to work at least 16hrs pw and we would receive no benefits! Yes its VERY unfair!

You and everyone else on maternity leave.

When I was on maternity leave, I was entitled to 18 weeks pay at 90% of my wage, The extra time I had off was unpaid.

You have it better than I did.

Firstly congratulations on overcoming bad start in life, and the baby, secondly, no I don't think it is fair, but I do think you should look into it further as I think you are entitled to something-when I had my first child I wasn't entitled to much and had to fight for that, now more help is available but you have to know what to ask for.
