S&M, or sometimes S/M, does indeed refer to sadism and masochism, and it isn't as freaky as it might seem. Strange as it sounds, people find pleasure in this type of activity.

For the masochist, being beaten in a certain way (as to not cause real damage) can have the pleasure centres of the brain stimulated by endorphins that the brain produces in response to the external stimulus. Endorphins are something of a natural high that can leave a masochist in a euphoric state. Sadist tap into the adrenaline and get a high in that way from the excitement of being able to beat on someone.

It is a strange symbiosis, and it doesn't even have to be sexual, but the emotions that emerge between the two can produce a greater level of intimacy for those involved. It's obviously not for everyone, but for those who practice this unusual dance, the effects can be profound.

sadism & masochism. Reicieving and inflicting pain is what this practice is. I find it to be VERY enjoyable. You should watch some videos and give it a try... it will be worth it.
