A merkin is a pubic wig. They were popular among the Tudors.
After AS C16th history, we all had to make a presentation on something Elizabethan. I did Mary Queen of Scots, while my friend did Elizabethan clothing and makeup. We couldn't get through a single lesson after that without someone shouting MERKIN at the top of their voice lol.

It's a wig that is made out of pubic hair. Back during the middle ages when there were plagues and disease ran amok, many people lost their hair due to various diseases. The royals families or rich would have these "wigs" mad as a symbol of their social position. Pearl Jam had an EP that was out about 15 years or so ago called "Merkin Ball"

Strange but true it really is a pubic wig (how it reamined in place i do not know) did they wear it during the 'act' ?????? Did they flash their new style to their frieinds (heaven forbid) or as a friend of mine thought when hearing us talk about a mirkin its really a measure for beer (ho ho ho) Did the 'collars and cuffs' match??????

Yes its true. Its a pubic toupee Sandy Toksvig raves about them; but Ive still no idea why she wears hers on her head.
