Becoming? The U.S. has always been divided based on race, ethnicity, and wealth. For a Nation of "equals" that supported slavery, refused blacks the right to vote, as well as women, put the founding nations people on reserves, fought a civil war, try to assassinate foreign leaders(Castro) for example, invade soverign nations because of their idealogy , executes more of it's citizens than any other "civilized" nation... Becoming? Has always been.

I disagree with you, it seems that you don't remeber that america was known as "the Great Melting Pot" of the world and its foundation is solely based on immigrants.
I don't think the multiculturism is divided the US because mutlicultuism is what carved this country from the bare land that it was.
New cultures and ethnicites should be welcomed by americans because they provide an opportunity to learn and experience new things. If someone doesn't want to accept these elements, then in my opinion, they are not being very patriotic. Instead, they are being close-minded, proud, and ignorant.

America is a melting pot of cultures coming together to build a nation. The only time I would REJECT a foreign influence in my own country is when that foreign influence is trying to abuse our system of government or influence our way of life in negative ways using racism as an excuse.

It's not the multiculturalism doing that - it's the closing of minds. People just don't want to be as informed of things as they used to. Instead, they seem to want everything more easily and rapidly digestible, which cuts down on their ability to think critically.
We've become a sound-bite society where attention spans are becoming nonexistent. "You're either for us or against us," you know.
People need to understand that not everything is black-and-white, and that not all decisions can be between "this or that." They're going to have to be able to think about other options and be open to them. Politically, for example, we're not limited to Republicans and Democrats - there are independents, Greens, Libertarians, Natural Laws, etc. for whom we can *FREELY* vote.
None of us should be forced to accept elements of a foreign culture, but we should all be open to others' desires to practice them. Perhaps Kwanzaa isn't your holiday of choice, but you should be OK that other people wish to celebrate it. It doesn't impede your ability to celebrate Christmas or Hanukkah (or do nothing, if you're so inclined).

I don't think it is "multiculturism" as much as "political correctness". Unfortunately, the PC crowd like to drag in race/ethnic background/religion etc. for political gain and the ones who claim to be multicultural the most are causing the rifts.

not necessarily racism, but politics is what divides this country.
The 2004 election, between Kerry and Bush, created great rifts between the American people. I can only imagine what the next election will be like.

I don't think it's that in the least; it's all about socioeconomic status though, and a battle between the rich and the poor.
