You can look in your state statutes. However, the level or class of a crime (misdemeanor or felony) depends on the sentencing term. Here is little basis so you understand the different types of crimes:
1. Violation - this is a crime (often labeled as a misdemeanor) where only a fine is awarded. A speeding ticket is a great example. No jail time.
2. A misdemeanor is a crime that is labeled as a misdemeanor OR felony in the statutes which carries a sentence of less than 366 days (1 year or less).
3. A felony is a crime that is labeled as a felony AND carries a sentence of 366 days or more (more than 1 year).

Felonies CAN become misdemeanors if the judge sees fit to sentence jail time of LESS than 366 days.

Most of those are not general legal terms, and would be defined by the specific criminal laws of the relevant state.

Most states have their laws available online, through either the state legislature or the state courts.

It varies by state. Use google to query the state name and terms such as felony, misdemeanor, and the name of the crime you are wondering about. This may all be available for free.

Which state are you in?

Misdemeanors are punishable up to 1 year in jail.

Minors--depends on how old they are and what they did along with what state you are in.

Felonies--again depends on what state you are in.

Your state's Revised Statutes are online and you can find your answers in the crime section.

They are defined in your state's criminal code and/or juvenile code. Do a Yahoo or Google search for: "(your state's name) criminal code" & you may get it on line. Or you can ask the lawyer who is representing the kid.
