Actually the wearing of hats is usually dated as being 1960. John F Kennedy is famously cited as being determinedly hatless.
I'm not really sure why hats declined. They're still handy and still look cool. I guess the style changed and then people forgot how useful hats were, so the style never came back.

The fashions, and the trends change so much, like t-dye, that went out and know its back in, everything does a full cycle, then seems to come back, next year hats will most probably be back in.

As an older guy who was actually around in the fifties. Male fashion never changed until the 60,s when the Beatles came on the scene everything changed along with headgear.

I'm with JAH. I went to a funeral a few years back and one guy showed up with jeans so ripped and torn that I thought his pants might fall apart during the service! People go to church in tee shirts and shorts????????????? Personally I love the look of those hats with the big brims! I look so good in those things, but I am afraid people would laugh at me, so I don't wear them.

Blame John Kennedy. He went hatless to his first inaugeration and fashion followed his lead. Also blame the baby boomers and the hippy movement of the sixties. No one wanted to look like their fathers

I don't know, but it's sad. People used to take so much pride in the way they looked. They'd dress up to go out shopping, etc. Now, a lot of people just don't seem to care at all. There's not much pride or modesty, when it comes to clothing that you see out in public, now.
