Absolutely!

1. Tank size. The biggest mistake most people make is using a WAY too small tank. Bigger tanks take a lot longer ot get smelly and offer a LOT of benefits to the turtle. Aim for about 10 gallons of swimming space per inch of turtle as a guide. (Make sure the water is heated to 75-80 in the warm end as well.)

2. Filtration. Use water filters. I like using several cheapo corner filters, but others prefer power filters. Aim for about 50-100% more filtration than a fish tank needs.

3. Water changes. Aim to replace about a gallon a day, sucking it from the bottom as much as possible. (If not using good filtration, aim for a total replacement every week or so.)

4. Use catfish, scavengers, snails, live plants, etc.to help keep the water clean- but be aware that turtles eat a lot of this stuff! Armored cats are usually better choices than small cats, for example.

5. Consider using a seperate feeding tank, and letting the turtle defecate in there before returning it to the 'display' tank.

6. Make sure the turtle is getting a good diet, and remove uneaten food before it breaks down and adds to the problem- most keepers remove it after 15-60 minutes.
