I understand its not your fetus because you dont know why the fetus was kept there that long. My guess was, the fetus have an unusual condition and the family agreed on leaving the fetus there for medical research. Why that long? Maybe the fetus didnt really die and they are keeping the baby until he's old enough to be discharged? who knows only the hospital, the doctor, and the fetus's parents can answer u as accurately as possible.

I don't know.

I'm the neonatal bereavement coordinator at my hospital, so I know a bit about this. If the fetus is greater than 20 weeks gestation, the family has to arrange for burial or cremation, and has to name the baby. If it's born before 20 weeks, the family has the right to have a funeral if they want, or they can leave the remains to for the hospital to dispose of.

I think the hospital holds the fetus for a while if the family has elected to have the hospital dispose of it, just in case they change their mind. But I'm thinking only about a week.

Autopsies can be done on still borns, but if the baby is really early, and I don't mean to sound gross or heartless, there's nothing left after the autopsy. They're just too small.

So without knowing how you know the hospital still had the baby after 8 months, that's the best I can do to answer your question.

I don't know. After my friend's fetus suffered a cord accident and was stillborn, the hospital let them take the fetus home and have a burial. You should talk to the hospital administrator and perhaps a lawyer, too.

they probably kept it for testing or observational purposes.....did they have your consent in keeping it for this long? you might want to consult a lawyer if you want to go that far!!
