I want opinions as the state of music...I'm really not into the "pop" crud that is polluting the airwaves, and the definition of "pop" changes everyday.. So four part question.....What is your definition of "pop" music? What are some "pop" bands? Is music going "down hill"? What do you listen too (so that i can judge how seriously to take your answer)?

I definitely believe music is going downhill. I remember back in the 90's (it doesn't sound like that long ago, but somehow it is), you could turn on your radio and hear real talent. Real musicians, real rappers with important messeges. Today, theres too much Simple Plan, 3 Days Grace, Evanescence, Greenday etc. (Not to mention all those boring uninspired bands like Sloan, Franz Ferdinand, The Arcade Fire, etc.)
I haven't listened to the the radio in a long time, only when I'm in the car, and even then I turn it to some kind of dancy/ techno station, because that music is just neutral to me and lets me think. The rock stations play whatever is the 'new thing', and there are few good rappers around anymore.
That's my opinion.

Pop, to me, means what is most marketable. Short for Popular, so go figure.

The problem is that there are more and more businessmen/women entering into what they see as a profitable marketplace with very succeptable/impressionable clientel. Many of these artists are willing to sell thier soul in order for a #1 album so the record labels are banking on that very fact. they know that the "artists" will do anything in order to get the hit record and they are completely molding themselves to become whatever is "popular" at that point in time. That is why trends are moving so fast right now.

It's all about the money. No longer is it about what the artist wants to produce, it's about what sells. XM radio has an "indie" station. If you want to hear real music, trun it on. Some of it sucks but at least the artists are playing with thier hearts in it.

I listen to jazz. No, I don't think jazz has gone down hill. It is getting better. I have never heard of Pop Crud. Is that like Rap?
Rock music has gone down hill in my opinion. Died when Disco
ended. I only listen to 60's and 70's rock when I am in my car.
We only have one Jazz station and the signal isn't that strong.
Country is becoming bigger and less "twangy".

"SHOW ME THE MONEY" that's what has happened to the air waves, as long as they make a profit with sponsor's that's all they want
