Don't forget that absolutely everyone there had a first day too once - and it was just as bad for them.

My advice would be friendly without being pushy. If they're talking about last nights tv, then add a comment - but don't try to get involved in what sounds like personal conversations. Remember to smile a lot and don't be afraid to admit if you're feeling a bit overwhelmed or shy - people are drawn to honesty.

Good luck - we've all been there!!!

I guess it depends on the job, but why are you desperate?...normally a new job entails introductions from current employees with new ones...jobs are not supposed to be social clubs but a place to advance your life and career if possible.

Its easy...just be very friendly when u meet and greet someone the FIRST time...and things will eventually start flowing the next time they meet you! I know.. there's not a lot to thier story that u feel so desperate to know !!!

Easy - you start off by being polite to people and slowly ease your personality into things. Steady at first - feel your way into how the various relationships work and only then assert your own personality.

introduce yourself, stop by someone's desk and say hi, ask if anyone wants to head out to lunch with you... whatever. It doesn't make you look desperate.

Ask them to lunch or start a conversation. Ask them about their job and how they like it. Ask them about their family and hobbies. Eventually you'll get to know everybody.

first you listen to what they're saying.. people totally want someone to listen to their stories... and then you can interject with some of your own. ask questions about stuff you're learning- thats how you end up making work friends..
