Any blanket statement about society as a whole is a mistake. I believe that when you look at the response that comes after a major catastrophe (hurricane Katrina, the tsunami etc.) you see many people involved who have not been directly impacted. I think the influence of the media is an impact to many of us we are inundated on a daily basis with the horrors of life. Whether it be local crime, war, political angst or concerns etc. we get overwhelmed. I think many people care however we sometimes feel powerless to act and when you have to wake up in the morning face your own problems taking on all of society's woe's can be overwhelming so people disconnect.
At work we often talk about the circle of control, at the inner part of the circle are the things you control, a little further out are the things you influence and the things outside the circle are beyond your control. This is used so as an employee you don't get overwhelmed by things you cannot change. In life I believe many of us live this way however we don't realize the power of the influence section. I believe we need to become individual contributors and not focus on the whole of our issues but for each of us to find one or two issues we are passionate about and work to correct them. If many of us try we will beat some of these issues back.

It may be true that people dont care about things which dont effect them, but I dont think that's the problem with society. The problem with society is that people care too much about things that dont effect them and not enough about the things that do! If people were more proactive within their own communities then they could make a difference, but instead everyone just sits around and expects someone else to do all their problem-solving for them.

Yes that is so true,it has become the ME generation.I work in Health-care and I see it there .I'm hurt by it. I do care and my patients can see that in me. However I cannot dictate how much time or the value of that time, those above me do.We just fail as society to put value on what matters most . That is other people and animals. Thanks for asking this question!!!!!!

If that statement is true, then there will be no society to talk about in the first place. True, there are such individuals but these are more or less the deviant minority compared to the conformist majority that makes society what it is.

Its not that they chose not to care they chose not to see the world past their front door, cause if they chose not to care then the world would be worse off than it is.
Now the one's who ACT like they care and THINK they are doing something for their own country are complete retards casue they try and stand-up for the most retarded of cause's like " I dont think there should be a cross in front of a court house" granted there should not because seperation of church and state is what this country was founded on, or the morons who want to fight for other cause's like "Let's ban violent video game sales in Louisiana" why do they do that? Cause is their baby-sitter and they dont want to have to pay to much attention to their own damn kids but will try and do something stupid like that.

I agree, so many people have become selfish, they live in their own small worlds and can't see and don't want to see beyond it. They simply don't bother to think about others, it's a case of If I'm alright Jack.

That is soooooo very true. Unfortunately we live in a very selfish society. People are after what is best for them and no one else.

I agree with this statement to certain extent. People do care, but you don't hear much positive things on the news.

What people with that attitude fail to realize is that by remaining apathetic about the plights of others, when the others are gone they will be the ones in trouble. And there will be no one else to help them.
