When products are insured by the Sender it guarantees that if the package is lost or the contents are damaged beyond use then the Post Office has to pay the Insurer the total amount of the insurance. In your case $50. This is good for when you mail big ticket items or something that can't be easily replaced.

When an item is over $50, I think then it gets the sticker. Under $50 just gets stamped. The package was torn and wrinkled because USPS is careless with our packages and they don't care. Even if it is insured and broken, USPS will claim the sender didn't package it well enough. I bought something from eBay, insured it, it was broken, USPS said it wasn't packaged well enough, seller claimed he wasn't responsible because it was insured and I was left with a broken item and no replacement and no refund. The items was under $25 so Ebay wouldn't do anthing about it. I was angry at everyone. I'm over it now, even though you probably can't tell by this answer.
